Local Triumph Connections (1)
The Standard - Triumph Motor Company, like many other large car manufacturers in the 1960's, exported C.K.D. (Completely Knocked-Down) kits around the world during the years of the Great Depression. One recepiant of these kits was the port of Belfast where Clarence Engineering, of Ormeau Avenue, assembled Triumph Heralds from the kits supplied from Coventry (along with selling other models from the Triumph range).
To the right is an advert from a publication of
May 1960 which shows a 948cc Herald. This was the original design of
Giovanni Michelotti, the Italian designer who gave the Herald (and
later the Spitfire) the look which is instantly recognisable to
Triumph Enthusiats! Although rare, there are still some original 'Clarence
Engineering' Triumph Heralds
in existance, identifiable by an additional plate added onto the
bodytub. Incidentally, these plates were also added onto other
Triumphs sold (but not built) by the company. |
If you know of any information about Clarence Engineering or bought a vehicle from them, I would be very pleased to learn more about the company. The link between Triumph and Clarence to myself as a local Triumph owner is of much interest. If you have any information, please e-mail me or use my reply form. |
